What if the White Sox signed Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper has been a member of the Philadelphia Phillies for over a year now, but what if that didn’t happen. What if Bryce Harper decided to become a member of the Chicago White Sox, how differently would the team look today.
When it comes to Harper signing with the White Sox, it is not that out there of a hypothetical. While typically you wouldn’t expect free agents of his caliber to look to a team that isn’t even the biggest in their own city, at the time of his free agency the Sox name seemed to come up often. So what if he did sign with the Sox.
A problem that I see that could have come with signing Harper, is if Reinsdorf would have been unwilling to spend money on top of it. Harper got a 13 year 330 million dollar deal from the Phillies, which would blow away any White Sox contract in history. When you think about it though, it comes out to just over 25 million a season which isn’t crazy compared to other contracts in baseball.
If the Sox spent this money on Harper would they have had the money to sign pitching that they desperately need? We have seen already that the Sox were unwilling to pay market value to greatly improve their pitching this offseason, so with Harper’s contract I think they would have been even less willing to spend.
Also I think that with Harper, the Sox might have ended up trading off some of their top prospects for big league talent, so you never know if they would have been able to execute good trades.
At the end of the day, it is an interesting thought considering how much would be different. Harper definitely would help get people in the stadium, but who knows if it would have been good for the team as a whole.
