Looking at the Cubs 2020 Draft

Although the 2020 MLB season is still not a sure thing, we did at least have the 2020 draft to follow this past week. While the draft was shortened to just five rounds there is still a lot for us to discuss.

1st Round: With the 16th overall pick in the draft, the Cubs selected high school shortstop Ed Howard. To my delight the Cubs stayed local and took hometown kid Ed Howard out of Mount Carmel High School. Like myself, you might remember Ed from the famous Chicago Jackie Robinson little league team that went on to win the U.S. championship at the Little League World Series. Now 18, Ed has all the tools to become a great prospect and be the Cubs everyday shortstop in the future. Being only 18 it will be at least a few years before we see him at Wrigley, but he has a ton of future potential.

2nd Round: In the 2nd round, the Cubs selected Dallas Baptist lefty reliever Burl Carraway. Viewed as the best reliever in the class, I think the Cubs possibly got a heck of a steal with this pick. Burl has a two pitch mix featuring a high 90's fastball and dominant curve-ball. Carraway should fly through the minor leagues and we could even see him pitching at wrigley field as soon as the end of this year.

3rd Round: In the 3rd round, the Cubs took Jordan Nwogu, an outfielder/DH from the University of Michigan. Nwogu definitely looks the part as he is listed at 6'3 and weighs 220 pounds. Nwogu brings huge power to the Cubs system as well as very good speed. We will need him to work on his fielding but the pieces are there.

4th Round: In the 4th round the Cubs made my favorite pick of the draft, taking Lefty pitcher Luke Little. Little is viewed as a future reliever as of now but could still possibly be a starter. The reason I love this pick, and I'm sure a lot of you do too, is that he has been clocked throwing 105 MPH! That's not a typo, he really hit 105! Little also consistently throws over 100 MPH and I can't wait to see him pitch for the Cubs.

5th Round: With their final pick of the 2020 draft the Cubs selected Koen Moreno, a high school pitcher out of North Carolina. To me this pick was the biggest question of the five, but in the 5th round I have no problem with them taking a chance on a projectable high school pitcher. Being 18 Koen will have a long road to Wrigley field, but if all goes well we could hopefully see him sometime around 2024.

That is all I have from the Cubs 2020 draft, the five player class I really like and can't wait to see what they are able to do in the coming years.
