Being an Out of Town Chicago Sports Fans

A problem for a lot of Chicago sports fans is that they move to a different state and then have trouble keeping up to date with all that is going on with their favorite teams. This article is going to help you if you encounter this problem.

Many people run into this problem either from having to move out of state for work, leaving for college, or even just going on vacation. I don’t know about you guys, but to me there's nothing more frustrating than missing out on what is going on with your favorite team when away from home. So here are some ways that you can stay up to date even when away from the state of Illinois.

Podcasts

Over the past several years podcasts have really taken off. You can find a podcast about just about anything and that includes many on Chicago sports. I find podcasts to be an easy way to keep up with the latest in Chicago sports. Also I enjoy them because I can listen to them in the car so it makes it easy for me to fit these into my routine.

A good podcast I would recommend that covers all 5 major Chicago teams is RedLine Radio Presented by Barstool Sports. This podcast is more for the adult crowd as they do curse quite frequently, but I love that I can talk about all 5 major teams in one show. It also mixes in a comedic value that I think a lot of you can enjoy and be entertained by.

Also NBC Sports Chicago offers different podcasts for all 5 of the teams. They have Bulls Talk, Cubs Talk, White Sox Talk, Bulls Outsiders, and Bears Talk. These podcasts have more of a professional feel than the one just mentioned, and are a great source for the latest breaking news for all the teams. These are for any age group, and I think you guys will enjoy them because they are quick episodes packed with all the information you need.

Podcasts are great for anybody outside of Illinois because they are accessible nationwide, so you don’t need a certain TV or radio station to catch up.

Real Time Box Scores

I know that following along on your phone trying to keep up with the play by play stinks, but sometimes it is our only option. You can find these live play by play box scores on apps such as ESPN and Yahoo Sports. I will warn you though following your favorite team this way, whether it be the Cubs, Bulls, Sox, Bears, or Bulls, is almost more stressful than watching it normally. I know that a lot of you like me have had to constantly refresh one of these apps to get the latest. This like podcasts is also something you can do from anywhere in the world, just don’t let your boss/teacher catch you in the act if you're at school or work.

Cable Options

Being out of state you obviously won’t be able to get the same local channels as you would in Illinois. Because of this it is hard to watch Chicago sports which other than the Bears are mostly exclusively on these channels.

With upgrades in technology the major sporting leagues are able to offer packages where you can watch games on your phone, tablet, laptop, or even gaming device. This is a game changer for fans out of state as this was not possible back in the day until technology advanced. Also with technology there are many ways for you to hook up your phone or laptop to your big screen TV so you can enjoy your favorite team the same way as you would watching in Chicago.

A problem that comes with this though is that it comes with a price. These packages can be expensive, and each league has their own package. So because of this if you want to watch the Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and your preference of Cubs or Sox, you will have to purchase 4 different packages. These prices can add up, so I know that this is not in the realm of possibility for everybody out there.

Another problem can be the internet connection. For these streams to work at high quality you need a good internet connection so I would only recommend these if you have a solid connection at your home or apartment.

So while I do think that this is the highest quality way to follow your Chicago sports teams from out of town, it also does have a few disadvantages that you need to consider before purchasing.

Twitter

In today’s world, you can find just about all sporting news breaking on the app Twitter. From breaking news to score updates you can find it all on twitter.

I would recommend following your team's major reporters on this app as this will allow you to get all the up to date information regarding your teams.

Also what I love about twitter is that you can interact with your fellow fans no matter where you are in the world. You can share and contrast your opinions with these people which I always enjoy doing.

This Blog

I hope to make this blog into an easy way for you all to follow everything that is going on in the Chicago Sports world. I plan on posting constant content to keep you up to date on everything Bulls, Bears, Cubs, Hawks, and Sox. Also like a few of the others mentioned, you can view this site from anywhere in the world so you don’t have to be in the Chicago land area to keep up to date. Also with growth I hope for this to become a great place to talk Chicago sports with your fellow Chicago fans, and create great discussions between fans.

In the end, I hope for those of you who are outside of Illinois that this article helped you figure out some great ways to still follow your favorite Chicago sports teams.
